Restored responds to the Domestic Abuse Commissioner’s Everyday Business report
Posted by Jenni James on 16 October 2025
The findings of the Domestic Abuse Commissioner’s latest report on the family court system are all too familiar for survivors of domestic abuse and those working to support them.
Each day, we speak to women who have experienced first hand the harm cause by a broken family court system. Survivors told that their experience of domestic abuse will have no bearing on child contact decisions, left with no option but to accept unsuitable and potentially unsafe arrangements out of fear that challenging them will not only compound existing trauma, but lead to even worse orders being made. Disjointed services and lack of understanding mean that domestic abuse, including it’s impact on children, is minimised, and survivors are not provided with effective support or protective measures whilst in court. All of these things contribute to a process that is exhausting and re-traumatising for those most in need of protection, and results in orders that are unsafe.
We echo the words of the report: urgent reforms to the Family Justice system are needed not just to improve the experience of survivors, but to save and protect lives. We call on the UK government to take action, provide adequate funding for the Family Court to address these issues, increase understanding of domestic abuse and ensure accountability.
