Restored responds to the Autumn budget

Posted by Jenni James on 27 November 2025

We are disappointed that the Autumn Budget contains no mention of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). If the Government is committed to its pledge to half VAWG within a decade, adequate and sustainable resources must be provided to ensure that services can continue vital work in prevention, emergency response, and providing long term support for victims and survivors.

As we begin the 16 Days of Activism, people across the world are turning their attention to the reality of violence experienced by women and girls on a daily basis: in England and Wales, one woman is killed every five days by an abusive partner ex partner. There would have been no better time for the Government to reaffirm its commitment to responding to this crisis. We continue to wait for a National VAWG Strategy, and call on the government to set out a clear plan of action to increase safety and ensure adequate support for women and girls.

We are glad to see the lifting of the two-child benefit cap, which will lift children out of poverty and help to ease some barriers to safety for victims and survivors seeking to rebuild their lives after abuse.

We recognise that public finances are under significant strain. Domestic abuse costs the UK economy £85 billion per year; investing in specialist support services is not only imperative to maintaining safety for women and girls, but will ease this financial burden in the long run.

It is vital that women and girls are not left to bear the impacts of a challenging economic landscape. As VAWG services are pushed to their own financial limits, with many facing closure or a significant reduction in the services they can provide, it has never been more important for the Government to allocate adequate and sustainable funding to the sector. We call on the Government to take urgent action to prioritise the safety of women and girls.
