Restored welcomes proposed ‘restriction zones’ to protect survivors of domestic abuse

Restored welcomes the proposed introduction of ‘restriction zones’, which will limit perpetrators to specific geographical areas rather than preventing them from entering specific places near to the survivor.

It should never be the responsibility of a survivor to limit their lifestyle or change their behaviour in order to stay safe, but sadly this is the situation for many who have experienced domestic abuse. Effective implementation of ‘restriction zones’ could help to bring peace of mind to survivors who often must live with the fear of encountering their abuser in a public place.

For this to be effective, proper resources must be provided to enable consistent implementation, alongside training for those working in the criminal justice system to ensure good understanding of the complexities of domestic abuse. Survivors’ voices should be central to decision-making to ensure truly survivor-centred outcomes.
